I've been working on this girl's design for awhile now and I thought she might look really cool as a model. She's still very much in the "Work in Progress" stage, but I thought it might be neat to post this before I tweak things here and there and start finalizing her look. As for the 2D designs- the oldest ones are at the top, the newer ones are at the bottom. I tried basing her off the newer drawings, but I still like the older designs, too :)

We recently acquired a new member of the family. His name is Linus and he's a Kenyan Sand Boa. He's not your typical streamline arrow-headed snake, he's a bit more round and has a charming overbite. He's very lumpy, very docile, and really enjoys burrowing. I enjoy burrowing as well, so we get along nicely.

Art Blocks for Ghana

A few weeks ago I was asked to participate in the Art Blocks for Ghana project- http://artblocksghana.blogspot.com/. Here is my little contribution :)

There's a preview show in NY this Saturday 2/26 and another event at Nucleus in LA on March 12th. The online auction will begin in March sometime. I'll post when I get more information.
I'm so honored to have been included in such a wonderful cause, and I hope this painting brings in some money for the kids of Ghana!

Horse crazy

I've been horse crazy for as long as I can remember. As soon as I could hold a crayon, I was drawing horses/unicorns/pegasus/ and pretty much anything equine related. I begged my parents EVERY year for a horse or pony for Christmas, and when I was finally old enough, I started taking lessons with a girlfriend at a local barn. I've been at my barn ever since, going on 12 years now, and I haven't looked back or regretted a minute of my stay there. Riding (and drawing) have kept me out of trouble and made me a responsible, hard-working, "contributing member of society" as my mom would say. After a few years of taking lessons, I started to half-lease a charming little Arabian and eventually fell head over heels for him. I bought my horse almost 8 years ago and we've been through a lot together. He's taught me a great deal about riding, and being a responsible person in general. I've taught him not to be so pig-headed lol.. and I'm pretty sure we've both made each other's lives exponentially better.

Shaved skulls for the Halloween costume contest this year :)

This past weekend, my folks found a bin of my old drawings in the garage, and I started thinking about what makes me "ME". A huge part of my childhood revolved around drawing and cartoons. Of course, one of the most prolific shows for me was My Little Pony. I still have a stack of VHS tapes under my TV and watch the old episodes every once in awhile. I was pretty stoked to hear that Lauren Faust was re-vamping my old childhood favorite, and had hoped it would be as charming as the original. After watching the whole first season (and consequently, memorizing the theme song and having it stuck in my head), I was thrilled to see that she'd not only re-designed the ponies in a VERY appealing way, but the stories are incredible and the look of the show is stunning. Lauren and the Hub team did a beautiful job with this new version, and I'm not surprised in the least that it's winning awards all over the place. I'm glad my ponies are back and you can bet I'll be glued to the TV for the next season :)

Here are a few ponies I'd been drawing over winter break. They're off-model, but I'm going to keep trying :)

Long time no post! Shame on me!! I've been so busy lately, I haven't had much time to relax or upload anything here. So here's a long awaited sketch dump of a few things I've been doodling lately :) The little girl is a potential film character, along with all the misc. non-animal creatures.. all of which are subject to change. The raptor is for a persona project in my rap/philosophy class.. his name is DJ Philosoraptor :) There's also a baby, a hummingbird shark, some stegosaurs, and an anteater type critter.

I'm sorry for being so absent here! I'll post more soon, I promise! I've been developing this little character for a few months now. Long story semi-short, I woke up one morning and stared at the wall for a long time, until I found a little pattern in the stucco that looked like a bird with a seahorse face. Weird, I know.. but inspiration can come from just about anywhere I guess :)

Creature of the Black Lagoon

I was SO thrilled to get this assignment as I'm a huge Creature fan. When I was little, my dad used to walk me down Melrose Blvd. past a shop that had the Creature on display in the window.. and I would BEG him to take me to the other side of the street because I was so scared.
Over the years I have learned to love the Creature.. and now have the poster hanging up in my cube at school ;)

I just got back from vacation, so I finally had the chance to upload the last shark from shark-a-day! I chose the Thresher shark because I LOVE their tails, and big puppy dog eyes :) I want to thank everyone who participated.. I didn't know it would be such a success, and I'm definately going to do this next year. Maybe next year I can get people donate their pieces to a charity auction to benefit sharks? We'll see!

Day six- Great White Shark

Day six was Great Whites! To me, they look like they have a lot of round shapes, and it was hard to make them look menacing without compromising the design. I tried to go for a happy medium between round and sharp, triangle shapes. I will have to practice these a little more!

Oops, forgot to update! Thursday's shark was the Hammerhead (scalloped, great, smooth, and any subspecies) and Friday was Australian Ghost Shark.. also known as the Elephant Shark :) I switched the shark schedule a little bit, and decided to switch Saturday's shark to the Great White. Sunday is a free-for-all!

So, it's Shark Week on Discovery Channel, the best week of the year. I've been planning on picking one species to draw every day of shark week. Seven days, seven species of sharks.
I was wondering if anyone would want to join me in this little adventure? If I get submissions, I will post links to them at the end of the week- either to my blog, or DA, respectively. Of course, it doesn't matter if you're late. I'm more concerned about exploring the different designs of different sharks and though I plan to make a drawing a day, it doesn't mean you would have to. So long as you draw a shark (maybe all 7!) and you post a link to your drawing by the end of the week (next Sunday). No rules here, this is all for fun.

Here's a painting I did for some very dear friends. My old riding buddy's mom asked for a painting of their horses for her husband for his birthday. They share the tack room with me and have been friends of mine for a very long time. I'm kind of embarrassed that I haven't done a painting of these two sooner. Skippy! is the chestnut on the left, and Sweetie is his mama on the right.

Last Monday I went to the La Brea tarpits with my buddy Jen. We had a lovely trip.. despite some minor mix-ups involving parking and another incident involving a lack of mayonnaise on our pre-made sub sandwiches from Vons. Those tomatoes did very little to moisten the sandwich.. but bless them, they tried. I'm rambling. Here are some skulls and stuff :)

Haha, just kidding.. I was rummaging around in the closet today and discovered these little beauties. My dad has saved pretty much everything I've ever drawn when I was little so I have boxes and boxes of this stuff.

I hope 2009 is just as challenging and wonderful as 2008. I hope to fulfill all of my resolutions, challenge myself to be a better artist, work on being a better person all around.. but most of all- I wish health and happiness for all of my friends and family :) Happy New Year! Long time no blog! Shame on me! Well nothing really exciting has happened this summer. Actually, yes it has.. I went to New Hampshire, came home and got into a car accident, got a new car, I moved into a new apartment, went to SDCC and partied hard, almost got into fisticuffs with the staff at Marriot in San Diego.. and I've been interning at Neopets all summer :) I hope everyone has had eventful summer and you've been happy and healthy and got some rest in!! I'm finished with my freshman film! YAY! What an exciting experience :) My hand was shaking when I dropped off the submission form to Nathan's office. This was a real learning experience, I have to say. I think I know a little bit more about how animation works and I'm going to try my best to apply that knowledge to next year's film. I already have a few ideas for next year's film :) always thinking.

Pink blossoms

I see these trees every time I drive home and I just love the contrast of bright pink and green foliage against the almost black bark. I really loved doing this painting, and I'm happy with the results :)

Too bad the scan takes away some of the vibrance and details :( boo

The "gouache bug" bit me!

After Leo's class last semester, I didn't think I'd ever want to look at another tube of gouache again. But I sat down last night and decided to paint something for myself. I just love the challenge this media presents, and I'm excited to experiment with it and see what it can do for me.

Here are some topiaries I painted for my mom for her birthday

I have a -stunning- Liquid amber tree outside of my living room window, and I've always wanted to paint it. I'm pretty excited about how this turned out :)
I'm really quite pleased with how all of these turned out, considering this was the first time I've tried painting trees with gouache. But I know I still have alot to improve upon ;) Enjoy!

Zesung did the telephone pole sillhouettes, Cindey did the underwater scene, I did the bugs, Linnea did the castle-themed sillhouettes, Nicole did the other underwater scene, and Eric did the "white" sillhouettes :)

Yay I finally got blog! Well, here goes :)

The monster is actually a character for my film this year but I did this for a final for my Indian Art class. Soo.. I added two more arms, a tambourine, and a paintbrush. I like recycling characters..
